LALU PRASAD SHAW

“I am not an artist but a painter. I like to paint directly; so initially I look for
the structure of a painting, then put up colours and in the last stage, I give
the finishing touch.”

Born in1937 Bengal, the artist did diploma in painting from Government College of Arts &
Crafts. Working mainly with gouache and tempera, his subjects are drawn from
nature and the men and women from the Bengali middle class surroundings.
Influenced with the poto chitra painters from his childhood, his paintings are
subject based, simple yet well composed. They are in bright colours with a
smooth finish that the artist uses to give life to his very expressive figures
almost frozen in time. With his characteristic lines and colours he lays great emphasis
on the physical characteristics and came to be known for his stylized human forms.

In his early years he started with oil painting doing still life and also
experimented with pastels, and for few years he devoted to graphic works in
abstract forms working for more than six years with lithographic prints at the
Graphic Department of Kalabhavana, Santiniketan.  Involved with lithography and
intaglio, he is also highly acclaimed for his work as a printmaker. He gradually moved
onto figurative drawing with tempera which became his favoured form.

Lalu Prasad Shaw as one of the leading graphic artists during the 60’s exhibited
extensively in India and abroad since 1956, and his works have been a part of prestigious
international shows.

He is the recipient of several awards like West Bengal State Lalit Kala Academy
Award, 1959, National Award in Graphic Art, India, 1971, Birla Academy
Award, Kolkata, 1975-1978, Award for Graphic Art and Drawing, 1978, All
India Graphic and Drawing Exhibition, Chandigarh, 1981.
