About Artist
Sujata Achrekar
The artist Studied art at the L.S Raheja School of Art, followed by a Diploma in Art Education at the J.J School of Art, Mumbai. She has had two solo shows of her works at the Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai, as well as several group shows including in Hong Kong and Singapore. She currently teaches at the Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai.
Achrekar was recipient of the Maharashtra Government State Award for Portraiture in 1990 and 1992, and the Bombay Art Society Award in 1995, the Drawing Award and National Award from the All-India Fine Art and Craft Society, New Delhi in 1997. Then in 2005, she was awarded by the NGMA Women Artist Camp.
Her skilful handling of colours and themes gives an unusual textual quality to her work. Figurative in style her canvas often portrays a central character as part of her narrative of the myriad human predilections, pathos, and emotions. The works sensitive, yet, colourful working with oils the artist experiments with a profusion of earthly tones along with the brighter shades of red, blue, green and ochre’s. Her paintings often depict the Sanskrit verses and other traditional imagery superimposed on the one solitary figure of the Brahmin Brahmachari
