Tapas Sarkar
“Basically I am an humanist…I am rooted in people…and I know I am going to last long after I am gone”
Born n 1952 in Kolkata, artist Tapas Sarkar did his art education from Government College of Art and Craft graduating in 1975.
Formerly Senior Fellow, Dept. of H.R, Govt. of India and worked as a modeller and was head of the studio at the prestigious Indian Museum, Kolkata for many years.
The artist had over ten Solo Exhibitions in Kolkata, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad & Santiniketan. He had more than 34 of his giant installations spread all over India, sizes ranging 10 to 55feet high for N. T. P. C., SAIL, IFFCO, and State & Central Govt. Organizations. A giant sculpture of 35ft by 16 ft by 10 ft in Brass by Tapas Sarkar was installed on the occasion to celebrate its historic moment of 150th Anniversary of Kolkata Port Trust glorious existence in 2020.
Participated in several workshops and camps in India and abroad including Ramkinkar Baij Centenary, bronze casting camp, organized by Lalit Kala Academy & Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan. He has held Tour & talk on ‘Indian Sculpture Contemporary Scene’ in many European countries, organized by ICCR in 1999.
Recipient of many Awards and Scholarships including Governor’s Gold Medal, Academy of fine Arts, Kolkata, Rabindra Bharati University & State Lalit Kala Academy, M. P. He is the founder member of Sculpture Gallery.
Inspired by mythology and Bengal school of painting, his sculptures are a colourful narrative in bronze, terracotta, fibre glass, plaster, aluminium and scrap. His great love and dedication becomes evident alongside his great skill in the creation of sculptures both small and gigantic sculptures. He gets a special mention as one of the few sculptors to make such aesthetically pleasing gigantic what is termed as “outdoor environmental sculptures”.
In 2000 artist completed 25 years of sculpting and a brochure was published that had recorded many observations of eminent personalities. One such by Pratap Chandra Chunder, formerly Union Minister of Education was “He roams freely both in the realms of authentic representation and fanciful abstraction”, described most astutely the artist and his creation.
