Artist, Suhas Roy was born in 1936 in Bangladesh and studied painting at the Indian College of Arts
and Draftsmanship, Calcutta, followed by graphic arts under the tutelage of Prof. S.W. Hayter at the
Atelier 17 Ecole Superior Des Beaux Arts, Paris (1956 – 1966).
In 1960 he became a member of Society of Contemporary Artists, Calcutta and was the principle of
Indian College of Art and Draftsmanship from 1971 – 1973. He went on to become a lecturer in painting
at Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan and ultimately retired as the principal.
From his earlier works of etchings, Christ figures and landscapes, the artist gradually shifted to his
popular Radha series of women focusing on the face -beautiful, romanticized, with a slight melancholic
feel to them. Getting inspiration from the daily lives around him, his work sometimes dark, mystical and
rooted in fantasy is reminiscent of his troubled and challenging childhood.
He practiced printmaking and glass painting too creating art on a variety of subjects
with another noteworthy series of his being the political turbulence in Bengal during
the Naxalite movement through his Disaster series. The artist passed away in 2016.
Suhas Roy’s works have been exhibited all over the world through exhibitions like the Asian Graphic
Prints Traveling Exhibition, USA, the Tokyo Print Biennale, Japan, Contemporary Indian Art,
Yugoslavia, Romania, Czechoslovakia, Hungry, and Wounds, at the Central Institute Modern Art, New
Delhi, and the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi.
