Sanjay Bhattachrya

"My genre of art had to compete with the camera, which copies reality better than the canvas. So we have had to find ways to blend the inner and outer realities, or maybe confront one to another."

Born in 1958 the artist completed his diploma from the Government College of Arts and Crafts in 1982. Then he went on to work as an illustrator in the Herald Deccan for some time before joining Hindustan Thomson Associates. It was during this period that he completed a series on water colour and oils that was exhibited as his first exhibition and solo in Dhoomimal Gallery in 1988.

The favourite student of the late artist Bikash Bhattacharya, the artist’s work exemplify the realistic genre in work as he creates realistic images of people and places amplifying the contrast of the inner and the outer world. Through his detailed and very real paintings of people comes out the stories of their lives, relationships, the suppressed emotions and provide a glimpse into their lives; sometimes nudging the onlooker to ponder and wonder into the empty houses to lived in rooms. Then there are those innumerable cityscapes of Calcutta in its many moods and seeped in history.

Known best for his series on the late Prime Minister Sri Rajiv Gandhi, done in oils, this series was jointly exhibited in 1994 by the National Gallery of Modern Arts and Rajiv Gandhi Foundation. Later on he went on to paint the portraits of the Presidents of India, Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma and K.R. Narayanan for the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

He has participated in several workshops and national and international art events his works are in display in the Parliament house New Delhi and World Bank including other public and private collections in India and abroad.
