Sudhangsu Bandyopadhyay

“The paintings are a ground view of metropolises bursting at seams, engaging colours in varying intensity. They are the artist's response to everydayness of things which translate in to Open Spaces Closed Spaces, all telling a story, yet leaving a lot of space to create new ones”

Born in 1949 this veteran artist did his education in arts both in India and abroad. In 1974 he did Diploma in Western Painting from Govt. College of Art Crafts, Kolkata, this was followed by History of Art and Art and Art Appreciation from Calcutta University in the same year. In 1976 he did Diploma in Sculpture from Govt. College of Art &Crafts. Kolkata, in 1992- Scholarship, Stadt Mannheim, Germany to be followed by Fellowship in Visual Art from Department of Culture, Govt.of India in 1994.

Over the years he has participated in all major exhibitions in India like National exhibition at Lalit Kala Academy, New Delhi; National Exhibition N.Z.C.C Nagpur; 6th & 7th National Biennial Bharat Bhavan. Bhopal. M.P. Artist Sudhangsu Baandyapadhyay has been the artist in residence in 1991- in Stuttgart, 1992- Mannheim,1993- Waibstadt , and in 2013- Hyatt Regency, New Delhi.

Since 1975-2023 the artist has done 45 Solo exhibitions in India Kolkata, Delhi, Chennai, Vadodara and Mumbai, and in London, Australia, Waibstsdt,Reutligen, Filderstad and Mannheim( Germany).

The artist has been the recipient of several awards since 1985 and has received “Lifetime Achievement Award for a teacher” -The Telegraph School Award for Excellence in 2010.

“Lifetime Achievement Award”, S.C.Z.C.C Nagpur by the Ministry of Culture, Govt of India in 2016 and the Shilpi Samman, Govt of West Bengal, Dept of Culture and Communication in 2021.

His works have been auctioned over the years in 1998- Painting auctioned at Christies(Sydney, Australia) and 2024-Asta Guru, Auction House.Mumbai.
